Gung ho for the holidays

I know it's only the start of November but for some reason I'm really looking forward to getting prepared for the holidays this year. It's still way to early to deck the house but I've already begun thinking about how I'll be decorating and I've already started some of my Christmas shopping. If you know me, this is very unusual, I'm always the one doing last minute gift shopping and last minute mailing of gifts to friends and family. This may be because business wise this is the busiest time of year for me and it's rush this and that. I'm really hoping to be able to take it all in this year and enjoy prepping for the holidays. How about you?

New Nina Designs Component Creations

I"m excited to finally be able to show you my creations as a design partner with Nina Designs and the beautiful components that I received from them!

The inspiration behind this peace is my love of color and the fact that I just adore peacocks. They have the most beautiful natural color combination and I tried to mimic that within this necklace. The large bronze peacock feather pendant is very substantial and simply stunning. I paired it with gold filled chain, and peridot, amethyst, and lolite rondelles.

This beautiful necklace features the large bronze tree of life pendant. It's a gorgeous focal piece and I have hung 3 small discs from it with my son's initials on them. It hangs on a gorgeous silk ribbon that is finished off with a bronze tulip hook and eye crimp clasp.

I've been wanting to make a "Bee" Happy necklace for a while now and this cute little bronze bee charm is perfect! I love mixing metals in my designs, the sterling silver tag goes beautifully with the bronze bee and I think they enhance each other just so.

Last but not least is the "Queen" bee necklace. As a mother of three boys I have to admit that I sometimes consider myself the queen bee. Keeper of all things and managing my little hive. The bronze honey bee charm and the bronze round stamping charm are so smooth and so pretty, they really look very much like real gold and the quality is outstanding.

This month we’d like you to meet Alison Kelley, a jewelry designer who grew up in a family of artists, woodworkers, and seamstresses. Her family roots are in Malta, a tiny island in the Mediterranean Sea that inspires her jewelry design. Alison started designing jewelry 17 years ago, but in the last few years, with the encouragement of her husband and three sons, she has turned her passion into a successful small business.

What is your favorite Nina Designs charm?
I love the sterling silver pineapple charm. It’s the first charm I ever bought from Nina Designs and still my favorite. It reminds me of my second honeymoon in Maui. I love pairing it with a white fresh water pearl and a champagne cubic zirconia.

Where do you find your inspiration?
Color is my biggest inspiration. I love to study how nature combines colors. This makes it easier for me to come up with inspiring color combinations for my upcoming jewelry designs. I used to watch a TV show on BBC America called “What Not to Wear,” hosted by Trinny and Suzanne, who offered advice on how to wear color and that’s always stayed with me whether I’m designing jewelry, decorating my home, or getting dressed.

If we were to visit your studio would we see a neatly organized workspace or messy mountainous piles of beads?
I’m a bit of an organization freak and I don’t work well in a mess, so I’d have to say most of the time you’ll find my studio well organized and tidy. If it’s not, then I’m not designing jewelry.

What is one piece of trusted advice you would give to someone just starting their jewelry business?
I’m a completely self taught jewelry designer. I’ve been making jewelry since I was a teenager. When I started selling my jewelry I did loads of research, mined the internet for how-to’s, and bought books on jewelry making. But, in the end, I learned most by trial and error, and it’s still that way. Don’t be afraid to go for it. If you never try, you’ll never succeed. I would also say create what you love and others will love it too! The jewelry I make are things I would wear, colors I would wear, and styles I would wear. Go with your gut and trust yourself to make what you love, and you will find that your love and confidence in doing so will inspire and attract others to your work.

Who is your ideal customer? Who do you make jewelry for?
My ideal customer is a woman who’s not afraid to wear color or add a little glitz to a casual outfit. She’s a woman who loves to wear jewelry because it brings a smile to their face. This tells me my designs are heading in the right direction.

How do you choose where to sell your jewelry?
Over the years I have become more particular with where I sell, because I have a better sense of who would buy my jewelry. I’m currently selling on 3 online venues, Etsy, ArtFire, and TrunkT. I’m also in a couple of local shops, including a day spa in Los Gatos and most recently the Hudson News Gift Shops in the San Jose Airport.

Lightened-Up Shepherd's Pie

A new recipe I tried last night and it got rave reviews from my husband as well as my kids!

Lightened-Up Shepherd's Pie (A Good Housekeeping Recipe and you can find it here too).

Ingredients

2 pound(s) all-purpose potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters

1/2 cup(s) 1% low-fat milk

2 tablespoon(s) Neufchâtel, reduced-fat cream cheese

Salt and pepper

1 pound(s) 97% extra-lean ground beef

2 large (10- to 12-ounce) onions, finely chopped

2 large carrots, finely chopped

2 large celery stalks, finely chopped

1/2 cup(s) dry white wine (my husband has a sulfite allergy so I used rice wine vinegar instead)

1 1/2 teaspoon(s) fresh thyme leaves, chopped

1 package(s) (10-ounce) frozen peas, thawed

1 package(s) frozen corn, thawed

Directions

In covered 4-quart saucepan, place potatoes and enough cold water to cover; heat to boiling on high. Reduce heat to medium; uncover and simmer 18 minutes or until tender. Drain well; return to saucepan. Add milk, cream cheese, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and freshly ground black pepper; mash until smooth.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Heat 12-inch skillet on medium-high until hot. Add beef and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and freshly ground black pepper; cook 3 to 5 minutes or until browned and cooked through, stirring. With slotted spoon, transfer beef to large bowl.

To same skillet on medium-high, add onions, carrots, celery, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cook 8 minutes or until tender, stirring. Add wine to skillet; cook 2 minutes or until reduced by half. Stir in thyme and reserved beef with any juices.

In 3-quart shallow baking dish, spread half of potatoes in an even layer. Top with beef mixture, peas, and corn. Spoon remaining potatoes evenly on top; spread to cover filling. Bake 25 minutes or until top is golden brown.

It takes about 50 minutes to put together plus baking time. Serves 6 to 7, has 350 calories per serving, 5g fat, 8g dietary fiber, and 25g protein .

From the Kitchen - Winter Squash and Fennel Gratin

Happy Thanksgiving!

My wonderful friend Tracy made the following recipe for my Bunco group. It was the most wonderful tasting veggie dish I have ever had, a must try! Thanks Tracy for sharing the recipe!

Winter Squash and Fennel Gratin

Ingredients

2 lbs. butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch cubes (about 4 cups)

2 tbsp. water, divided

2 lbs. acorn squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch cubes (about 4 cups)

1 tbsp. butter

2 cups coarsely chopped fennel (anise), white bottom part only

1 cup chopped onion

1 cup diced Havarti cheese

1 (8-oz.) container mascarpone cheese (at Nobhill Deli)

Salt and freshly ground pepper

Directions

Prep: 20 minutes Cook: about 45 minutes

1. Preheat oven to 400°F and butter a 2-quart casserole dish. Place butternut squash and 1 tbsp. water in a large microwave-safe dish and cover tightly. Microwave on HIGH for 7 minutes or until squash is tender, stirring once; drain. Repeat with acorn squash and remaining water.

2. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add fennel and onions; cook, stirring frequently, for about 10 minutes or until onion is tender. Remove from heat and stir in cheeses and squash; season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to prepared dish and bake for 20 minutes or until lightly browned and bubbly.

Serves: 6 to 8

Nutritional Information:

Nutrition per serving (351 g): 370 calories, 11 g protein, 25 g total fat (14 g sat., 0 g trans), 31 g carbohydrate, 5 g fiber, 6 g sugar, 65 mg cholesterol, 240 mg sodium, 9 points

I received my new business cards which turned out great, they're crisp and professional looking, but ... I showed them to my husband who said yes they're very nice but they're so "grey", they're not really you. He went on to explain that he knows my love for color and that although these are very nice they just don't say Alison. The more I have been thinking about this the more I think he is right. I have a great love for color and color combinations, so I'm now thinking that I need to change my new look yet again. Something with more color and something that says and explains my love for color. What do you think?

I'm lucky to have an opportunity next week to present my jewelry to a some local shop buyers. I've very excited but also very nervous about the whole thing. It's my first time presenting my jewelry like this and I'm kind of anxious about it. So I have been frantically working on getting my line sheet made up and figuring out my display etc. Busy busy, but it's all good.

What do you think of my new look and business cards?

I'll be posting how it all went and some helpful tips that may helps someone who's looking to do this sort of thing as well.

We Love Grandma Necklace

This necklace is perfect for any grandmother! It features a sterling silver chain adorned with a hand-stamped sterling silver donut and adorned with Swarovski crystal beads. The Swarovski crystals in this necklace represent this grandmother's grandchildren's birthstones.

Be Still My Heart Necklace

A statement of beauty and love, this beautiful heart pendant necklace is composed of a 14 mm (0.55") brushed sterling silver heart and round 14k gold vermeil beads. It hangs from a gorgeous ball sterling silver chain.

Raw Ambiance Earrings

These beautiful earrings feature round 5/8" raw brass discs that I cut, hammered the surface for texture and domed. For movement and length I wire wrapped the textured brass discs with round sterling silver beads which hang from sterling silver french hooks.

Life to say the least has been very interesting these last few weeks.

First my 11 year old son had an appendicitis. What we first thought to be the stomach flu turned out to be a ruptured appendix. Surgery followed by a week stay in the hospital (my husband and I switched off to make sure someone was with him 24 hours a day) with a few complications along the way, we all survived and all is well now.

Next came my trip to New York City were I would be visiting my friend Janna for the first time. I was very much looking forward to my visit with Janna and to walking the streets of New York. Unfortunately I had hurt my foot a week prior to going and it was still hurting while in NYC but I managed to walk many many miles each day. Adrenaline and having fun with Janna made it easy to bare with my aching feet. I had a really great time, Janna was an amazing hostess and showed me lots of NYC within my 4 days there.

A day after getting home from New York I found myself in the emergency room. I was at my kids school finishing up a reading program that I help out with and I kept getting this strong urge to pass out as well as having trouble with my eyes. I was very sensitive to light and I couldn't keep my eyes open, I was shaking and that feeling of passing out kept coming and going. Next thing I know my friends at the school office were calling my husband to come and take me to the emergency room. A few hours later in the emergency room I was told I could go home. From my lab results they said I was as healthy as a horse, they have no idea why I was feeling like I was. Said perhaps it was a viral infection and that I was to rest for a few days. I slept alot for the next couple of days, couldn't drive even if I wanted to and I got tired easily anyway. I'm keeping a low profile and trying to take it easy still, my foot still hurts too, so I hope to see a doctor about it next week some time. I still have no idea why I wasn't feeling so good, will probably never know, I'm just glad I feel better now and can get back into the swing of things. After all the kids only have 2 more weeks of school left and there is lots to do.

From one moment to the next you never know what can happen in your life, so enjoy every moment of it!

Question of the day - Why do I always get the naughty boys?

Dash is no different than one of my three sons, he's sweet yet he is very naughty. He's cute as can be, it's his saving grace really. He likes to get into alot of trouble especially in my office. Many times he gets kicked until he's ready to just relax and sleep in his cot. Eating my sterling silver wire is a big no no, he's not allowed anywhere near my work surface really. But being of the sneaky feline nature he has to try. Good thing I keep my door closed when I'm not in my office.

What Is Gold Vermeil?

History

Gold vermeil, which is pronounced "vehr-MAY," is sterling silver plated with gold. The initial process originated in France around 1750. This technique called for fire gilding. Jewelry makers applied mercury and gold to the silver and exposed the metal to extreme heat. The heat caused the mercury to vaporize and the layer of gold to adhere to the silver. However, the mercury vapors caused many artisans to become blind. France made this process illegal in the 1800s. Modern gold vermeil is usually created using an electrolytic process, which is much safer than fire gilding yet produces a similar result.

Significance

In order to qualify as gold vermeil and not merely gold-plated silver, a piece of jewelry must meet certain requirements. The base must be pure sterling silver. It may not be coated with any other metal prior to having the layer of gold applied. Finally, the gold layer with which the silver is plated must be at least 10-karat gold, and the layer must be at least two and one-half microns in thickness.

Types

There are various different levels of quality in gold vermeil. As with pure gold, a higher number of karats mean a higher quality piece of jewelry. Vermeil can be created using 10-karat, 14-karat, 18-karat, or 24-karat gold. 10-karat gold is the lowest quality and 24-karat the highest. You can find gold vermeil in different colors, including yellow, white, pink and tri-color.

Benefits

Gold vermeil is comparable to pure gold in appearance and artisanship. Because of its primary composition of sterling silver, gold vermeil is considerably more affordable than pure gold. Since gold vermeil by definition cannot contain other metals, people with nickel allergies or sensitivity to other metals can wear gold vermeil jewelry pieces comfortably and safely. In addition, because of its increasing popularity, there is a wide array of choices in gold vermeil pieces.

Considerations

Gold vermeil will last for many years without tarnishing and without the gold plate wearing away if you properly care for it. You should avoid wearing gold vermeil jewelry in the bath, shower or when swimming. Do not have gold vermeil jewelry machine polished (typically performed by a jeweler), as this process can wear away the gold layer. Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth to remove dirt, oils and other material from the jewelry. Glass cleaner can provide added luster if necessary.

What is Gold Filled?

Gold Filled is also called rolled-gold. These jewelry findings are not actually filled with gold! They are made of a base metal (usually brass or copper) covered by sheets of gold in a mechanical bonding process. Effectively a thick coat of gold: the gold content is 5% of the total weight. Usually made with 14k gold, it is hard wearing. With reasonable care it will not peel or flake, and should last as long as solid 14k gold jewelry. It is safe for most people with sensitive skin.

Dash here. Today I wanted to tell you about my god sister, Ruby. She is the sweetest and cutest little thing. Momma is her god mother and just loves her. Ruby lives all the way in New York City. Ruby's momma, Janna and my momma Skype, so Ruby and I get to see each other on the computer, it's a pretty cool thing to do that. Ruby has had a few exciting adventures and I hope to do some of the fun things she gets to do, like going to Central Park. But for now, I am enjoying my new home and my new family, we are so good together.

Dash is the cutest little thing that has recently entered into our lives. He is an amazing little guy. He's frisky and very playful. He loves to be around people and he's fully potty trained. We named him Dash because he's a very quick little guy and he dashes here and there when he's playing. He was born on October 30th, he looks big for his age, but he is long and lean.

I am so so excited! I bought a new tool, a Swanstrom Disc Cutter (early Christmas present to myself, hehe) that I am so thrilled with. This new tool is going to open me up to designing many many new things. The possibilities are endless! My new tool came only yesterday, it actually wasn't supposed to be here until Tuesday, but thanks to our wonderful postman I got it early. I played and played with it. I actually didn't even know how to use it but I read those instructions and just went for it. It's really easy to use and is truly amazing. So what does this new tool do, it lets me cut sheet metal into 10 different sized circles, and what can I do with these circles, I can make necklaces, earrings and so much more. Beginning in January, I hope to have a few of my new pieces listed in my online shop, so stay tuned!

Okay so if you know me, you'll know that I'm a toolaholic. I love tools. I ask for tools for my birthday, for Christmas and any other occasion I can ask for them. I'm a strong believer that if you have the right tool and the right mind set, that you'll be able to accomplish just about anything. Tell yourself you can do anything and you'll be pleasantly surprised with the end result.

Ocean Life

My family loves going to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We get the yearly membership and enjoy going as often as we can. It's been a little while since we've gone and I think it's time to go again.

My favorite site is that of the jelly fish you see in the photo above. I took these pictures on one of our trips there, isn't it an amazing sight to see!

From the kitchen - Sliders with Chipotle Mayonnaise

Ingredients

Chipotle Mayonnaise:

1 cup mayonnaise
2 chipotles in adobo sauce
1 tablespoon adobo sauce
1/2 lime, juice
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Sliders:

1 to 1 1/2 pounds ground chuck, 80/20
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Cheese slices, your choice
Mini burger buns

Burger Bar (if desired):

Chipotle Mayonnaise
Pickles
Red onion slices

Chipotle Mayonnaise:

Directions

Add all the ingredients to a food processor and puree. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper.

Sliders:

Preheat grill over medium-high heat.

Form the meat into 2 to 3-ounce portions, packed tightly. Season with salt and pepper.

Place the sliders on the grill. Wait until they are nice and crusty on the first side, about 4 to 5 minutes and then flip and cook another 4 minutes. When the sliders are about done, top with desired cheese and close the grill, allowing the cheese to melt.

Place the slider on mini burger buns and top with chipotle mayonnaise and any other desired toppings.

Ethan, Owen and Logan have recently started playing flag football with a NFL sponsored league. I love that they got uniforms that represents a team from the NFL, they look so cute (I mean cool) in them. All three play every Sunday, and our football day lasts anywhere from 4 to 5 hours. We go from field to field and game to game. It's a busy tiring day but well worth seeing them play and having lots of fun.

You may be wondering were have I been. I've been busy doing this and that. Really, there just isn't enough time in a day to get everything I want done. Balancing a household with a husband and three kids while running a business is a challenge. Slowly but surly I'm working my way to catching up on things. So back to blogging, and why not start off with a nice recipe for you to enjoy.

Hot Dog Mummies are so fun to make, you can even get your kids to help you with these. The first time I made them was for a big Halloween party we threw at our house. These hod dog mummies disappeared like ghosts!

Instructions

1. For each mummy, separate one breadstick from the roll and use kitchen shears or a knife to slice it in half lengthwise to create two thinner strips.

2. Wrap one strip at a time snugly around the hot dog. Depending on the size of the hot dog, you may not need all of both strips. Leave about 1/2 inch of hot dog exposed for the face area and continue wrapping the top of the hot dog.

3. Bake the mummies on a cookie sheet at 350º for 15 to 18 minutes or until the breadstick wrapping is golden brown.

4. Remove the mummies from the oven and cool them for 5 minutes. Add yellow mustard eyes just before serving. Makes 12 mummies.

I have to admit something to you, I haven't blogged because I have been ashamed that I didn't get my PMC task completed. I've had every intention to start it. I think about it everyday and everyday something comes up in which I don't have time to get started on it. Being a perfectionist doesn't help me any. When I start something I like to finish it, so there goes that fear thing or whatever you call it to start something new and be afraid to no have time to finish it and to then not start on it at all.

I still have hopes each day that I will have a go at it, who knows maybe tomorrow. I suppose if it's on my mind one of these days it will happen.

I've neglected my blog yet again, sorry. So with that said I thought I would share with you something so good, something that I baked this morning. Chocolate chip banana bread. The recipe is my moms and I've altered it just a tad (she didn't have any chocolate chips in hers, it was just banana bread) having a house full of boys (4 including my husband and them all being chocoholics, I had no choice but to add chocolate to it. Enjoy!

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

¼ cup butter

2 cups flour

1 egg

1 cup mashed bananas (2 bananas)

1-cup brown sugar

1-teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

¼ cup milk

1-teaspoon vanilla

1 cup chocolate chips

First mash bananas then mix all ingredients together. Pour into a loaf pan or 4 mini loaf pans. Bake at 350* for 50 minutes or until knife comes out clean. If you bake them in the mini loaf pans, bake for 30 minutes.

While the first criteria for jewelry is beauty, even the most gorgeous pieces of jewelry can be worn to distract from either the jewelry itself or your outfit. The occasion frequently dictates the rules of fashion. You should be the center of attention, not your jewelry. Jewelry is an accessory – an adornment.

Too Much Jewelry

Perhaps the most common jewelry faux paux is wearing too much jewelry. It can confuse the eye and blend your pieces into the appearance of only one piece of rather gaudy jewelry. A stack of bangles worn with layers of bead and chain necklaces and large dangly earrings and several rings is just too much of a good thing.

Noisy Jewelry

Along with too much jewelry, noisy jewelry is usually inappropriate. An arm load of bracelets that clanks or tinkles at your every move is distracting and even irritating.

Wrong Weight and Size

Your jewelry should coordinate with the fabrics in your clothing. Heavy pieces don’t work with a thin silk blouse. You would be better with several thin chains or a strand of pearls. Pearls look great with a collared shirt and jeans, but not so well with a heavy sweater. Wear those heavier stone beads with your bulky sweaters. Along the same lines, the length of the necklace should coordinate with your collar. A choker can be worn with a very deep neckline, but if you wear it with a turtleneck or high neck shirt, it looks crowded.

Incompatible Materials

Jewelry can be made of anything from gold and silver with pearls and diamonds to copper washers with natural stone beads. The gemstones and materials used in your jewelry should coordinate, not class with each other. A skilled designer can coordinate even seemingly incompatible materials for a unique and striking look.

Incorrect Size

If you are a larger sized person, tiny jewelry will get “lost" on you and can make you look even larger. If you wear jewelry in proportion to your body, it helps unify your look. A tiny person in huge jewelry or too much jewelry can look almost like a child playing dress up.

No Focal Piece

A large necklace, bangle, earrings and ring eliminates the focal point you need for your ensemble. One piece of jewelry can be the focal point and the others can accessorize that piece. Along the same vein, too many matching pieces is just too “cute" to wear. Earrings that match a bracelet or a necklace and matching bracelet look good. If everything matches exactly as a set, it becomes too predictable and lacking in imagination.

Earring Problems

Earrings seem to cause the most frequent faux paux in jewelry. A well-fitted dangling earring calls attention to your shoulders, which is the last feature to age on most women, but a tiny earring on a large woman can give her a “fat-neck" look and long dangling earrings on a woman with long hair can look disorganized and messy. Multiple ear piercings have become fairly common, but the earrings need to be coordinated with each other using the largest in the lowest piercings.

Dirty Jewelry

Dirty jewelry is frequently seen. Earrings and necklaces can be affected by hairspray and cosmetics while cleaning products and lotions can affect rings and bracelets. Keep your jewelry clean by using the cleaning methods recommended for each type of jewelry you wear and your jewelry will create a wonderful accessory for your outfit and your own look.

Question of the day - Where have I been?

I have been busy getting my office organized. Thursday I got the urge to to rearrange and clean my office. I didn't really have a plan, but I knew that I wanted a change. So I started taking things out and then I moved onto rearranging my furniture. The first two photos you see below is how my office used to be, LOL, when it was last clean anyway. It wasn't a bad arrangement but it wasn't a great one either. My desk is a giant, it was taking up most of the room space, still does but a little differently now.

Welcome to my newly arranged office!

I rearranged my desk into 3 working areas now, what you see below is my computer area as well as my book case full of beads to one side.

This is the center of the room and you can see another part of my desk that is now strictly a beading area and to the right my other bookcase full of beads.

This area has the last piece of my 3 part desk unit. It's now a beading area as well as my desk to do any paper work on. Oh, and what you see above on the shelves, is my collection of Southernliving at Home products, yes, I'm addicted!

This last part of my office you can see where I have a curtain covering the closet, what's behind that curtain is another work area. I built a work bent into the closet when we first moved into this house and I used to use it for scrapbooking. I always liked scrapbooking standing up and that was the reason behind it. You wanna see what's behind the curtain?

Alright I'll show you, I still have some more sorting to do here but you get the gist of it, and you can see I still have lots of scrapbooking supplies up above on the shelf too.

I still have some more things I want to do but I thought this wasn't bad for 2 days worth of work. I still want to make new curtains and I have more things to get rid of but in the mean time I figure this space is clean and organized enough so that I can't complain that's it's crimping my creativity any longer.

Today my three boys started school. It was so sweet seeing them all happy to be going back. They enjoy going to school and love seeing all their friends that they didn't see during their Summer vacation. My youngest, Logan started Kindergarden and he loved it! It was really cute to see him be such a big boy about going to the same school as his older brother. So for one school year I will have all three boys at the same school.

I did managed to list a new necklace today though, Green Harmony necklace. It's green and beautiful. I think of green as the truest color of nature. From the kitchen - Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins

My kids love muffins and these blueberry muffins are one of their favorites. Shh, don't tell them that they're actually good for them. This recipe comes from Cooking Light.

Ingredients

1 2/3 cups quick-cooking oats
2/3 cup all-purpose flour (about 3 ounces)
1/2 cup whole wheat flour (about 2 1/3 ounces)
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups fat-free buttermilk
1/4 cup canola oil
2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
2 large eggs
2 cups frozen blueberries
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Cooking spray
2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Preparation

Preheat oven to 400°.

Place oats in a food processor; pulse 5 to 6 times until oats resemble coarse meal. Place in a large bowl.

Lightly spoon flours into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Add flours and next 5 ingredients (through salt) to oats in bowl; stir well with a whisk. Make a well in center of mixture.

Combine buttermilk, oil, rind, and eggs in small bowl; stir well with a whisk. Add to flour mixture, stirring just until moist.

Toss berries with 2 tablespoons flour, and gently fold them into the batter.

Spoon batter into 16 muffin cups coated with cooking spray; sprinkle batter with 2 tablespoons granulated sugar. Bake at 400° for 20 minutes or until muffins spring back when touched lightly in center. Remove from pans immediately. Place on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.

*Tossing unthawed frozen blueberries with a couple tablespoons of flour before adding to the batter keeps them from turning the batter purple while they bake. If you use fresh blueberries, skip that step.

Tidbits and What Nots - Dappling Tool Set

A few posts back I mentioned that I purchased a Dappling Punch with Block Set and I had a few of you ask me what that is exactly. So, here is the run down of what a Dappling set is.

Dapping tools are punches with a ball shaped end. As they are used to dome metal discs and making halves of beads they are sometimes called doming punches. They are usually used with a dapping block, a square or rectangular block of steel or wood which has perfect hemispherical indentations in different sizes.

I have yet to start playing with mine. I'm still trying to learn all I can from books and searching the web about how to use my new Dappling set. With my kids starting school very shortly, I hope to will have an opportunity to give it a go very soon. I'll be sure to post what I end up making with it here.

I have a subscription to InStyle magazine, (great to see what styles and colors are in fashion at the moment) and so today while I was thinking about what quote I should post, all while looking at around the mass of beads I have spread around my office at the moment, I remembered something that Salma Hayek said in the InStyle April issue.

"Any color can look beautiful on you. It's like a relationship. You just have to embrace it and work with it." ~Salma Hayek

I couldn't agree with you more Salma! I have a few customers that look at my designs and say wow, I really love that piece and the color but I just don't think I would look good in it or have anything to wear with it. I like suggesting that they wear color with color. Take this piece above, what do you automatically think it would match with? Browns? Well yes, but it also looks great with green, blues, pinks and reds. Wearing color with color is just that, wearing black and blue is not wearing color with color, wearing blue and teal is color with color. Mix it up, you'll be surprised at what looks great together!

Don't get me wrong, I love my kids and spending time with them during the summer... but, I CAN"T WAIT FOR THEM TO START SCHOOL!

I think there comes a time during summer break where us moms say, okay I've had my fill, time for them to go to go back to school. I think I'm there, it'll be good for all of us. I have three boys, wonderful boys, ages 11, 8 and 5. They have been keeping very busy and all but it's still hard not getting any sanity time. They start school on the 18th and I admit it, I'm looking forward to them going back to school and me getting back into a regular routine.

Are you at this point too?

P.S. Today is usually my artist interview day, it's already been such a crazy week and I wasn't ready for it, sorry. Life will soon be back on track, at least I keep telling myself that :)

From the kitchen - Chocolate Covered Potato Chips

Ingredients

1 pound high quality milk chocolate, chopped

8 cups ridged potato chips (make sure you use a good quality chip, the cheaper ones tend to break).

Directions

Place about 3/4 of the chocolate into a heat safe bowl, and place over the top of a pan of simmering water. If you have a double boiler, use that. Heat, stirring occasionally until the chocolate has melted, then continue to heat the chocolate to 110 degrees f (43 degrees c), stirring occasionally. You may use a meat thermometer if your candy thermometer does not go that low.

1. As soon as the melted chocolate reaches temperature, remove it from the heat, and stir in the remaining chopped chocolate until melted. Continue stirring until the chocolate has cooled to 90 degrees f (32 degrees c). Touching a dab of chocolate to your lip will feel cool.

2. Use tongs to dip potato chips one at a time into the chocolate. Place on waxed paper starting at the point farthest from you and working your way in so as not to drip on your finished chips. Cool until set. You may refrigerate if you like.

2. How did you decide on your art/craft?

I was always one of those kids who couldn’t keep my hands to myself; I had an overwhelming desire to touch everything from glue to Dippity Do. I always liked art, but didn’t think it would pay the bills, so I got a real job. After marrying and having a child I stayed home for 10 years to home school. During that time I was able to discover my creative side. I did some painting, basket weaving and knitting but clay was the thing that really intrigued me.

3. What is your favorite part about having your own business?

4. If you had to choose just one favorite item in your shop, what would you choose, and why?

I think it would have to be my new EARTH bowls. I just love the roundness of the bowls and the contrast between black and white with a bright color added. Art from Earth, what could be better?

5. How has having your own business changed you and your life?

I have a pride in my work that I didn’t have in the HR business. I don’t make much money, but I make things I really enjoy. I feel like I can actually say “I am an artist” instead of “I like to do art” It also pushes me to learn and experiment with new things everyday, from testing glazes to creating Photoshop banners to twittering. I never would have done these things in my previous jobs.

6. What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Constantly try new things, if you like the results, refine it, rework it, perfect it.

I love this little recipe. I say little because it doesn't have very many ingredients and it's so easy to make. Not only is it easy but it's also weight conscious.

If you're familiar with Weight Watchers, it's 1 point per two muffins.

(oh, and these are really popular with the kids, mine love them!) Enjoy!

Pumpkin Spice Muffins

1- Box spice cake mix

1- 16 oz can pumpkin

1- egg

1/2 cup water

Mix all ingredients together. Fill 24 mini muffin cups 1/2 way full. Bake muffins at time temperature on the cake mix box.

My Heart

Pam at Pixelimpress tagged me a couple of days ago. She asked that I post a photo that represents my heart. Today I spent quite a bit of time looking through my photos trying to find that one photo to represents my heart. I found several to choose from and it was great fun going through our family photos. I couldn't pick just one, and I'll explain why!

I love sewing the kids Halloween costumes. My mom sewed costumes for my brother and I, and I'll always remember how much we loved that. So when I had kids I started doing the same. I made the above costume for Logan back in 2004 when he was only 4 months old, he's now 5 years old. When I saw this pattern I knew that I had to make it, he turned out to be the cutest Fez Monkey!

This Photo of Ethan (taken in 2005) as a mad scientist always makes me laugh (alot). He had recently lost his two front teeth and it was perfect timing for this costume. He played his character quite well too, you can see it in his eyes how happy he was.

This cutie is Owen wearing an Ewok costume that I made for him (also in 2005). He loves Ewoks! He had the Ewok waddle down to a science. It was great because we had total stranger stopping us to take pictures with the Ewok, they were obviously Star Wars fans. This photo makes me think of how lovable and cute this boy will always be.

This is my favorite photo of all my boys. It was taken in June of 2005 shortly after we moved into the house we currently live in. It's got a swimming pool and the boys were so happy to move to a house that had a pool. I just love all their smiles. It makes me smile whenever I look at it.

Last but not least this is my favorite photo of my mom and I. We had just finished saying our goodbyes when I asked my husband to take a quick picture of us before we were to take her to the train station. This picture makes me feel loved.

1. Where can you be found? What is your website?

My main etsy shop is http://kitchenstitchen.etsy.com and I still have my original shop that I am keeping open currently. It is http://sunnykristi.etsy.com. I also have a Blog at http://sunnypondhome.blogspot.com where I write about sewing, other crafting, home decorating, and life in general.

2. How did you decide on your art/craft?

Deciding on my art was easy. I had grown up with grandmas and a mom who sewed all the time. I learned some from them, I'm sure I picked up a lot through osmosis and lately I am teaching myself. I just love sewing and creating.

3. What is your favorite part about having your own business?

My favorite part of having my own business is the creating part. I love taking beautiful fabrics and crafting them into functional items.

4. If you had to choose just one favorite item in your shop, what would you choose, and why?

Right now I love my red beaters potholder. In general I love this style of potholder made of soft terry cloth with a lined pocket. I find them so function and comfortable to use. They are like a potholder and oven mitt all in one! And the red beater fabric is just my favorite right now.

5. How has having your own business changed you and your life?

I am a stay at home mom and having my own little business has given me a sense of purpose outside the very important purpose of being a mom and wife. I was a career woman for many years before starting a family and it was hard to stop cold turkey when my first child was born. The business helps me to spend some time on something I love outside of the family. It helps me to be a better mother and wife.

6. What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

For other artists and crafters in general I would say to do what you love and make time for your craft. For those who want to sell I would advise to have a plan, find a niche, brand yourself, be consistent and professional. I would also say that it will take some risk, especially investing some money up front in good quality materials.

Pineapple/Strawberry Jello

1 pkg strawberry jello

1 pkg frozen strawberries (8-12 ozs) – better to use kind paked in own juices

1 can crushed pineapple

1 banana

Sour cream

Dissolve jello in boiling water (use ½ the amount called for on the box). Cool by adding crushed pineapple and frozen strawberries. When slightly thickened add banana and sour cream. Refrigerate.

I have always loved to do arts and crafts. I love to sew, I love fabric, but I also knit and crochet and have done a little painting as well...

3. What is your favorite part about having your own business?

My favorite part about having my own business is the freedom to be able to do what I want to do when I want to (mostly). I really hate schedules! Oh, and I really love being a stay at home mom.

4. If you had to choose just one favorite item in your shop, what would you choose, and why?

My favorite items in my shop are my series of pouches (new ones to come soon). They're small enough so I can buy really nice fabrics in small amounts. They can be embellished and whimsical or really simple. Whatever mood I'm in :) They're also functional and affordable.

5. How has having your own business changed you and your life?

I spend a lot more time on the computer now, I am surprised at how much I have learned over the almost year I've been on Etsy. I also take a lot more photographs-a skill I'm trying to improve ;)

6. What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

I would tell other artists and crafters to always pursue what they are passionate about. I believe if we do what we love, it'll be successful!

From the kitchen - Chicken Cutlets Brasciole

This recipe coincides beautifully with last weeks recipe of Lemon Pepper Capellini and again comes from Rachel Ray on the Food Network.

It's got a five star rating!

Chicken Cutlets Brasciole

1/2 cup hot water

Handful golden raisins

1/4 cup pine nuts

1 cup flat-leaf parsley

1 tablespoon lemon zest

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

3 slices white sandwich bread, torn

1/2 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano

4 pieces boneless, skinless chicken breast

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons butter

1 cup dry white wine

2 cups tomato sauce

2 tablespoons fresh tarragon, a few sprigs, leaves chopped

Pour very hot tap water into a small bowl. Add raisins and plump 5 minutes.

Lightly toast nuts in a small skillet over medium low heat.

Drain raisins and pat dry. Place raisins, nuts, parsley, lemon zest, garlic, torn bread

and cheese into processor and pulse into a stuffing.

Butterfly the chicken open by cutting into and across the breast but not all the way

through. Pound out the cutlets and season the chicken with salt and pepper. Fill the

breasts with stuffing, roll and secure with toothpicks.

Heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the

brasciole all over 7 to 8 minutes, remove and set aside. Deglaze pan with wine,

scraping up the drippings. Stir in tomatoes and tarragon, add chicken back, cover

and simmer 15 minutes. Slice and serve.

I couldn't sleep very well last night so waking up at 5:40 a.m. today was almost a relief. I thought rather than tossing and turning in bed I'd get up and get my day going. So I got on my computer and start reading my favorite blogs. Pam of pixelimpress on Etsy has a fantastic Blog and reading her blog post from Friday is what sparked this question of the day.

How did you meet your significant other?

I love finding out how others met their loved one. Everyone has a different story and every story is special in it's own way.

I met my husband many many years ago at Macy's. I met him there because I was doing a little modeling for Macy's at the time. He was in college and working part time in the men's active ware department. My friend Carolina and I had just finished doing a fashion show that day and she said had someone she wanted me to meet. She introduced us and it was love at first sight, the rest is history!

Tidbits and What Nots - You Are What You Eat

I'm reposting this because I feel that is so important to eat healthy. You'll feel great and look great too! Oh, and not to mention you may also prevent yourself from getting sick.

A wonderful T.V. Show I like to watch on BBC America is called "You Are What You Eat". Holistic nutritionist Gillian McKeith works with unhealthy eaters to break a lifetime of bad habits in just eight short weeks. Here are her top 10 tips to do to change your eating habit from bad to good.

Top Ten Tips

1. Avoid sugar - found in cakes, biscuits, confectionary, chocolate, candy, desserts, soft drinks and many other foods.

2. Use whole grains rather than refined carbohydrates - white bread, white flour, white pastry, white pasta and white rice should be replaced with brown rice, quinoa, millet, oats, barley, rye, buckwheat and red rice.

3. Avoid artificial additives - these may be sweeteners, preservatives, colorings or flavorings.

4. Avoid stimulants - caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and other recreational drugs.

5. Eat vegetables or salads with lunch and dinner - Variety is important, so experiment with those that you don't normally eat.

6. Include some sources of essential fats every day - these include oily fish (such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, herrings and trout), pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, linseeds/flaxseeds, hemp seeds, walnuts and avocadoes. Avoid processed fats such as low fat spreads and margarines.

7. Have at least 2 vegetarian days each week - good vegetarian proteins include chickpeas, lentils, mung beans, borlotti beans, butter beans, aduki beans, tofu, tempeh, quinoa, amaranth, nuts and seeds.

8. Avoid processed meats - ham, salami, chorizo, hot dogs, bacon and any smoked or cured meats. These all contain nitrates that have been linked to stomach cancer and are high in saturated fats and salt which are linked to cardiovascular disease.

9. Cook from scratch wherever possible - this means buying whole, natural ingredients and cooking or preparing them yourself. Avoid processed and packaged foods as much as possible.

10. Buy locally grown, organically produced, seasonal produce where possible - check out farmer's markets, farm shops and pick-your-own farms for the freshest produce.

My creative bent has been all over the place; quilting, needlepoint, art, theatre performance, singing, interior design, floral design, and… Jewelry! TaDa! After floral love I went to a local bead store, took classes in everything (still am) work there very part-time, and do some teaching. This art form is challenging and soothing at the same time and never ever boring - my brain gets hysterical contemplating all the possibilities!

3. What is your favorite part about having your own business?

Hmmmm - I am generally compelled to follow my own "music" and the word trend - may send me in the opposite direction. Do you sense a little rebelliousness there?!

4. If you had to choose just one favorite item in your shop, what would you choose, and why?

Choosing one of anything (like cake ?or pie? teehee) is always difficult which is why I like multicolor very much. But right now, my metallic cuff ...

Change is not easy for me - I like to find my comfort zone and stay there (cozy); however my little Etsy shop keeps me focused and moving forward instead of backwards. Plus learning ANYthing on the computer has been a big "screeeaaam" but I am learning (you can teach an old dog a new trick!) The day-by-day discovery of this community has been a new joy - like a new song, or a shade of red unseen before.

6. What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

I am not in any position to give advice---but for me, it's "do what you love and love what you do" in your art. Life is too short for anything else.

From the kitchen - Lemon Pepper Capellini

This recipe was introduced to me by my sister in law, Jennifer (thank you Jennifer!), courtesy of Rachel Ray's 30 minute meals. It's so good and makes such a great side dish. Enjoy!

Lemon Pepper Capellini

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

3 tablespoons butter

4 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 teaspoon coarse black pepper

2 lemons, zested and juiced

Salt

1/2 pound capellini

1/2 cup shredded or torn basil leaves

Grated cheese, to pass at table

Place water on to boil for pasta.

In a large skillet combine olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add garlic, pepper

and the lemon zest.

Salt water when it boils then cook cappellini to al dente, 2 to 3 minutes.

Add a ladle of cooking water to lemon pepper butter and stir in the lemon juice.

Drain pasta and toss with lemon-pepper butter and salt, to taste.

Add the basil to the pasta and serve a small bundle alongside your entree or serve as a delicate first course.

2. How did you decide on your art/craft?
I fell in love with felt after learning to make slippers from zannestar.etsy.com. Since then, I’ve been making felt from up cycled, wool sweaters. I enjoy combining my interest in felt, fabric, and sewing with my love of color, texture, and bargain hunting. I’m teaching myself to needle felt and will, hopefully, have new pieces for fall.

3. What is your favorite part about having your own business?
The creativity for sure and having control over the whole of it myself. I enjoy the background work as much as creating.

4. If you had to choose just one favorite item in your shop, what would you choose, and why?
Hmmm…..I think it is the Happy Flowers Teapot Cozy. I had the idea for it in my head for a while and I’m pleased to have completed it and with how it turned out. Also, the gray felt that I used is some of the nicest I’ve come across. It’s thick and remarkably soft.

5. How has having your own business changed you and your life?
It was a big step for me to open the Etsy shops. The shop part is easy, but the idea of putting myself “out there” is scary. I am highly self-critical and am constantly having to step outside of that part of myself in order to move forward.

6. What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?
For Etsy, post excellent photos and make your customers’ shopping experience a good one. I also think it’s important to connect with other sellers.

This recipe comes from my friend Patricia. Patricia made it for us at Bunco and it was divine. She originally found the recipe on Sunset- My Recipes and altered it just a bit. You must try this, it was so so good! Thank you Patricia for sharing your altered recipe!

Here is the recipe in it's original form, below are the changes that Patricia made:

Ingredients

1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons grated lime peel
2 pounds seeded chopped watermelon (about 3 lb. unpeeled)
About 1 teaspoon lime juice

Preparation

1. In a 1- to 2-quart pan over high heat, combine 1 cup water, sugar, and lime peel and bring to a boil. Let cool, then pour through a fine strainer into a bowl.

2. In a blender, whirl watermelon and 1 cup of the lime syrup until smooth. If there are seeds, pour mixture through a fine strainer into a bowl. Stir in the lime juice. Add syrup and/or lime juice to taste (mixture will taste less sweet once frozen).

3. Pour purée into an 8-inch square baking pan. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze until mixture has started to freeze at the edges but is still slushy, 2 to 3 hours. Stir the mixture thoroughly, scraping the sides down. Cover and freeze until solid, at least 8 hours.

4. To serve, scrape with a fork to make large flakes and spoon into chilled glasses or bowls.

The changes that Patricia made and how we enjoyed it are as follows:

Patricia used lemon peel and lemon juice instead of the lime and only used a little bit of water instead of 1-cup and didn't bother to heat it and let the sugar disolve, she just put everything in the mixer.

Ever wonder if your creations inspire someone in some shape or form? I get inspired by so many things: nature, shapes of things, colors, and yes also by others creations. A while back I saw the most beautiful thank you card, it had the most beautiful combination of earth tone and this card inspired me to make a necklace using those same colors.

We are especially adept at courageously launching into hidden and unknown areas in ourselves and others. In spite of our fears, there is a deep quest for our truth in each of us.

I prefer a road map on my journeys, and I am willing to go without one if I must.

I've fallen in love again... with luxe gemstone beads that is. I've been buying gemstones from the start of my business but in the past year I have deeply fallen in love with the finer more luxe gemstones. Their color, their luster and shape is so stunning and so luxurious that I'm addicted to buying them. I have been working on several new designs to create with them and within the next few months I will be showcasing my new designs made with these luxe beauties.

These pictured beauties are a part of my new luxe collection, they are made with Labradorite beads and Smokey Quartz Fancy Twist beads, aren't they stunning!
